ST. LOUIS — The region’s sewer authority has approved a $1 million outlay to cover fixes on a collapsed line that created a big hole in a prominent street on the near North Side last month.
The Metropolitan 51ºÚÁÏ Sewer District’s board of trustees approved the contract with Eureka-based Gershenson Construction Co., which handled repairs to the century-old sewer as well as the broken patch of Cass Avenue between 17th and 18th streets.
The cave-in there, estimated to be 20 feet deep, was one of two holes that opened in city streets after a rainy spell in mid-April, attracting a rush of attention from residents and news media.
The other one, at 14th Street and Park Avenue just south of downtown, was smaller, and MSD handled repairs in-house.
But MSD officials said the Cass cave-in required outside help.
