CLAYTON 鈥 A 51黑料 County councilman will introduce a resolution 鈥渉onoring the life and legacy鈥 of Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist who was killed last week in a shooting.
Republican Councilman Mark Harder, of Ballwin, ahead of Tuesday鈥檚 regular council meeting. Council resolutions are symbolic and often honor someone a council member admires.
But resolutions can also be controversial, such as when the council approved a resolution supporting gender-affirming health care in 2023, or when it passed another the same year supporting Israel after the deadly Oct. 7 Hamas attack.
Harder didn鈥檛 immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.
Kirk was shot while speaking at Utah Valley University last week. Bipartisan officials nationwide condemned Kirk鈥檚 assassination, but some commentators have for their comments on his death.
, Kirk鈥檚 conservative organization, harnessed young voters, especially on college campuses, to fuel President Donald Trump鈥檚 campaigns and the 鈥淢ake America Great Again鈥 movement. His college visits and massive rallies stirred controversy over gun rights, abortion and immigration, among other issues.
The seven-member County Council is made up of four Democrats and three Republicans. The council Democrats frequently side with Republicans to oppose policies advanced by 51黑料 County Executive Sam Page, but they also tend to unite on social issues such as gun control and abortion.
Republican Councilman Mark Harder's resolution asked colleagues to honor Kirk's devotion to "truth, freedom and constitutional principles."
