FENTON — Maddie DiMaria jumped higher in the air than she had all night long.
No, the Cor Jesu Academy standout sophomore forward wasn't celebrating one of her two goals that helped the Chargers to a 4-0 win over St. Dominic in the Class 4 girls soccer state championship match Saturday night.
DiMaria, considered by many to be the top underclassmen in the country, was elated as she set up senior teammate Malena Anic with the third goal that provided some breathing room in the 49th minute.
The 5-foot-7-inch speedster said it was the most fun she had all night long.
"Setting up a teammate, watching them score, and see the excitement on their face, that's the biggest thing for me," DiMaria said.
Yes, one of the best high school players to ever come out of this soccer-crazy region is selfless and modest as well.

"That's just Maddie being Maddie," explained sophomore teammate Roz Doherty, who also serves as one of DiMaria's best friends. "That's who she is as a person and as a player. She knows how good she is, she knows she can score at anytime. But she'd rather watch one of her teammates get a goal."
The Chargers won their second successive title and claimed their fourth overall championship to go along with crowns in 1985 and 2012. Their title last season was in Class 3.
DiMaria put on a show again in front of approximately 2,500 fans at Soccer Park, one of the largest crowds to see a girls state final at the Fenton complex.
She needed just 59 seconds to put her stamp on the match by converting on a penalty kick after a dangerous burst up the middle that ended up with DiMaria being dragged to the ground in the box.
DiMaria pushed the lead to 2-0 with a goal from close range in the 20th minute that deflected off St. Dominic goalkeeper Maeryn Meyer and into the net.
"We see her all the time and she can still impress us with what she does," Anic said.
The helper DiMaria dished out to Anic was meaningful in a myriad of ways. Anic missed last year's state tournament with a concussion.
DiMaria wanted desperately for her teammate to find the scoresheet this time around.
"I'm not sure people realize just how unselfish she is," Cor Jesu coach Rachel Brcic said.
They might now.
DiMaria broke free on the right wing and bore down on the goalkeeper. It appeared she had a somewhat clear path to the goal.
Yet at the last minute, DiMaria slipped a cross over to the wide-open Anic, who pounded the ball home and triggered a massive celebration.
"She's an anomaly," Anic said. "We're just so grateful that we can all do this together with her leading the way."
Doherty finished off the scoring by using her head to pop in a corner kick started by Emma Shields with 22 minutes and 52 seconds left in the match.
St. Dominic (15-7) got buried early thanks to the fired-up Chargers, who were out to take no prisoners.
"(The lead) was unexpected, but it definitely made us able to breathe a little bit, really be able to settle in," Brcic said. "The girls then upped their game and continued to push and push."
St. Dominic (15-7) came out intent on stopping DiMaria, double marking her from both sides.
"She a great player," St. Dominic coach Greg Koeller said. "When you have to put so much effort into watching her, it leads to other people being open."
DiMaria, who finished the season with 45 goals, tallied four times in a 7-0 win over Nixa in a semifinal game on Friday. Her six goals in the final four ties the state record set by Ray Ray Cole of St. Teresa's in 2002 and tied this season in Class 1 by Grace White of Elsberry.
Cor Jesu (22-1) won its final 15 matches and improved to 43-5 over its last two title-winning campaigns.
The Chargers' only loss of the season was a 4-3 setback to St. Joseph's Academy on April 23. They allowed just six goals over the final six weeks of the campaign with senior goalkeeper Isabelle Hochmuth recording back-to-back clean sheets at the state tournament.
St. Dominic bounced back from a 5-5 start to the campaign to reach the final four for the 11th time.
Meyer led the way down the stretch and made several huge saves Saturday to keep the final score respectable.
"Just to get here was unbelievable," Koeller said.
