ST. LOUIS -- Ten students at Vashon High School have been suspended for 10 days after fights broke out Wednesday in the building, according to 51黑料 Public Schools.聽
School officials recommended that the students be placed in one of the district's alternative education programs, the district's spokesman said.
The atmosphere at Vashon, 3035 Cass Avenue, has been unstable since Terry Houston left as principal last month. Houston, who also developed a reputation for maintaining order at Roosevelt High School several years ago, told staff last month he was leaving Vashon for personal reasons.
On Sept. 26, more than 100 students walked out of Vashon in protest of the fallout from Houston's departure. They said the learning conditions had deteriorated. They complained of too many fights, too many long-term substitute teachers and not enough. They also said they wanted Houston to return. Some students have requested a public forum in which they could talk about the problems. 聽
