Anne Niedbalski, 17, is comforted by her mom Kathleen Wiley after evacuating from West County Center in Des Peres on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025. Police responded to a call of shots fired but after an investigation found there was no gunfire and no injuries in a fight that broke out near the food court. During the chaos Niedbalski hid in back of a store with other customers.
Instead, they said, a review of mall surveillance video showed one of the people throwing a chair at another person during the fight.
There was also another report of a truck backfiring in the mall garage off Interstate 270, though that was unsubstantiated, said Des Peres public safety Chief Eric Hall in a statement.
One person in the fight was interviewed by police and provided a statement but said they didn’t wish to prosecute if police identified the other people involved, Hall’s statement said.
