ST. LOUIS 鈥 A descendant of Dred Scott has installed a towering memorial at Scott鈥檚 grave in Calvary Cemetery honoring the former slave who, along with his wife, was denied freedom by the U.S. Supreme Court in one of the most infamous judicial rulings in the country鈥檚 history.
The Dred and Harriet Scott statue is seen outside the Old Courthouse in 51黑料, on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2022. The enslaved couple聽filed suit for their freedom at the courthouse in 1846.
Dred Scott, whose gravestone is seen at Calvary Cemetery in 51黑料 in April 2021, was denied freedom in 1857 by the U.S. Supreme Court, which upheld a Missouri Supreme Court decision that Scott was not free because Black people weren't considered U.S. citizens.
