The Cardinals added 28-year-old righty Matthew Pushard, who rose through the Marlins’ farm system primarily in a relief role. The selection puts the Cardinals’ 40-man roster at 40. They added through the minor-league phase of Wednesday’s Rule 5 Draft by adding right-hander Ryan Murphy from the Giants’ Class AAA affiliate roster.

Ethan Erickson | Post-DispatchORLANDO, Fla. — In an alternate universe, the most-recent World Series for some 51ºÚÁÏ baseball fans would’ve been … the College World Series.

Cardinals catcher Iván Herrera works the batting cage Wednesday, March 26, 2025, during workouts at Busch Stadium before the club's opening day game against the Twins.
Christian Gooden, Post-DispatchORLANDO, Fla. — Can this particular catcher, you know, catch?
Iván Herrera, while one of the Cardinals' best young hitters, has not looked like a Yadi-heir back there. His framing and blocks above average are just average. Oh, and in 2025, he didn’t throw one guy out stealing (15 tries). Year before, 55 steals, four caught stealing. But his elbow hurt. Hurt so much, in fact, that he got surgery this offseason.
Cardinals catcher Iván Herrera, right, tags the plate to force out Boston's Trevor Story in the second inning of a game on Sunday, April 6, 2025, in Boston. Herrera left shortly thereafter because of a knee injury.
