51黑料 City SC midfielder Eduard Lowen went into the most detail yet on the ordeal he and his wife are going through as she battles brain cancer in a video posted on the YouTube page of his church, Matthias鈥 Lot in St. Charles.
鈥淭he conversations between me and Ilona are obviously very, very tough,鈥 Lowen said in an emotional, heartfelt, eight-minute video posted Wednesday that also goes extensively into how their faith life has helped them, 鈥渂ecause you don鈥檛 talk about like simple stuff. You talk about death, you talk about our marriage maybe not existing anymore, the marriage that we love so much, the love that we have for each other and for me, watching my wife suffer, the person that I love the most, and what I鈥檝e been saying, my biggest fear was always losing my wife, the person that I love the most, that is not only my wife, my best friend, my biggest supporter, and now getting to see the situation and basically seeing her body wasting away, but from the very start, what she鈥檚 been saying is, I want to be with the Lord more than anything else, because that鈥檚 where I belong. I mean, the relationship with the Lord is everything.鈥

Lowen described how his wife had been diagnosed with a benign brain tumor in Germany before he joined City SC, but then during last season, she began having severe headaches and the tumor was found to have grown significantly, which led to a series of surgeries. Eventually, doctors told his wife that the cancer was Stage 4 and couldn鈥檛 be cured.
It鈥檚 been over a year since the original diagnosis, which Lowen discussed in a session with reporters in May 2024. This year, the two returned to Germany for treatment for a month, and while there, she needed an emergency surgery again.
鈥淪he was like, doing really bad,鈥 Lowen said, 鈥渂ut we thankfully, could make it back to the States, where we were thinking that hopefully things are going to progress now with the knowledge that we now have in pursuing treatment. But we knew the entire time that it鈥檚 going to take a miracle of the Lord to fully heal Ilona without any side effects, even because, like, the doctors didn鈥檛 give us any hope, and then being here back in the States, ended up in the hospital again for two weeks, where she had, in two weeks, five to six surgeries again, got out of the hospital, back to the ER, back home. It was kind of a roller coaster.鈥
Lowen has appeared in only eight games with City SC this season as he has dealt with his wife鈥檚 condition. He recently told the Post-Dispatch before he returned to action in late May that he might have to leave again at any moment. He played 90 minutes against San Jose on May 31, having a goal and an assist, and said afterward he had played through some pain in his hamstring because he wanted so desperately to play.
He trained with the team early in the week, but at every stoppage in play, a trainer would be working on his hamstring. The injury ultimately kept him out of Sunday鈥檚 game with Portland and interim coach David Critchley said Tuesday he didn鈥檛 expect Lowen to be available to play this weekend either.
