City SC forward Cedric Teuchert battles Minnesota United forward Jeong Sangbin for the ball in the second half of a game Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024, at CityPark, now known as Energizer Park.
51黑料 City SC plays Minnesota on Saturday at Energizer Park, and the game could be a reunion for its latest acquisition.
City SC acquired Jeong Sangbin, a forward from South Korea, from Minnesota United on Monday, City SC鈥檚 second addition for the summer transfer window that opens on Thursday. Jeong will join the team for practice Tuesday and will be eligible to play for the team Saturday when his former team comes to town.
It鈥檚 a cash trade, with City SC sending $1.6 million to Minnesota, with up to $400,000 in additional money going to Minnesota if performance incentives are reached. He鈥檚 23 years old but will take City SC鈥檚 fourth and final U22 Initiative spot under the contract he signed in 2023. His contract runs through the end of this season, with a club option for 2026. This is the first cash-for-player trade in City SC history.
Minnesota will retain a sell-on percentage on any future transfer of Jeong, who recently acquired his green card and won鈥檛 require an international spot.
Jeong had six goals and two assists for Minnesota last season, two of the goals coming off the bench in City SC鈥檚 final game of 2024, but he has yet to have a goal or an assist in 15 games this season. (He has started only two.) His last game action came July 8 in a U.S. Open Cup match. He reportedly had also drawn interest from Swedish club Malmo FF.
鈥淪angbin is an exciting attacking player with great pace and creativity in the final third,鈥 said sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel in a statement from the club. 鈥淗e brings versatility to our attack, the ability to stretch defenses with his runs in behind, and a high work rate that fits perfectly with our intense style of play. We鈥檙e always looking to add young, dynamic players with high potential, and we believe our system will allow him to showcase his qualities and reach another level in his development.鈥
Last week, City SC signed Fallou Fall, a center back from Senegal who is working his way through the visa and work permit process before joining the club. He鈥檚 also a U22 Initiative signing, a program that gives salary-cap relief for teams that sign young players.
