CHICAGO — After the Blues descended the four flights of stairs from the visitors clubhouse, after they emerged from the first base dugout, after they donned their special cream-colored “51şÚÁĎ” jerseys, the Blues arrived, at last, at Wrigley Field.
“We’re here now,” goaltender Jordan Binnington said, “and it’s time to enjoy the moment.”
The Blues practiced on Monday evening at the stadium, the prelude to Tuesday’s Winter Classic against the Blackhawks, the third Winter Classic in Blues history following 2017 at Busch Stadium and 2022 at Target Field. It is also the first time that an outdoor venue has been used again and the first rematch in Winter Classic history as the Blues and Blackhawks met in 2017.
The red marquee on the exterior of the famed baseball stadium still read “Wrigley Field,” the “home of Chicago Cubs,” but it also included Tuesday’s matchup on the black-and-white screen. The climbing ivy was covered, even if the winter-tinted brown ivy could be seen peeking out close to the foul poles. The out-of-town scoreboard in center field listed all the NHL games that will take place on Tuesday.
Hockey invaded baseball. 51şÚÁĎ against Chicago, just as the Midwest intended.
“It’s Cards-Cubs, it’s the big rivalry,” Blues coach Jim Montgomery said. “I’ve been here to see three of those series, and now to be Blues-’Hawks here in Chicago at Wrigley Field, it’s going to be a great day.”
There will be hints of baseball included throughout the day.
There will be Binnington’s mask for the game, which features Albert Pujols, Yadier Molina and Adam Wainwright on it. Plus, Binnington said he has two more similar-looking masks on hand but with different Cardinals greats depicted on the side of them.
“I think they’re more familiar with me and my time in 51şÚÁĎ,” Binnington said. “Obviously, legendary Cardinals players. With the baseball stadium, it felt like a good time to honor them.”
There will be 51şÚÁĎ native Pat Maroon on the other side, playing in his first season for the Blackhawks against the franchise he helped win the Stanley Cup in 2019. It was Maroon’s first trip to Wrigley Field, and of course, the Blackhawks are using the Cubs clubhouse, which puts the Cardinals fan in a tough spot.
“It is a little weird, I’m not going to lie,” Maroon said. “I was talking to the clubhouse manager, I was telling him I’m a Cardinals fan. They were like, â€Oh, do you want some Cubs gear?’ I might have to sneak some Cubs gear in even though I don’t know if the DeWitts will like that, though.”
There was Oskar Sundqvist on Monday parading around in Harry Caray-styled glasses, complete with oversized lens and wide black frames. He went to the press box to sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” and wore the glasses on the ice for some photos. Sundqvist took them off for practice since “they’re really good at fogging up real quick.”
“The English version, we nailed it, one try,” Sundqvist said of the ballpark tune. “The Swedish one was harder. Didn’t really connect with the Swedish words. It took us a couple of tries, but me and (Philip) Broberg, we figured it out.”
There will be the Blues’ new helmet logo, a stylized and interlocking “StL” that could resemble the classic Cardinals logo if you squint hard enough. You won’t have to squint as hard to see the logo look like a treble clef.
There will be the stairs that the Blues have to battle during intermissions, a hike to the dugout that will be a welcome change from the sub-zero temperatures that Blues had to battle last time they played outdoors in Minneapolis.
“They’re always something,” Binnington said. “We have 80 stairs to climb up in between periods, so we’re going to figure that out, too.”
The sounds will be different without the stands right on top of the ice, as thuds from goalie pads feel like they’re delayed, Binnington said. The boards where the Zambobi doors are might be deader that other parts of the rink, which could impact how the teams are able to forecheck.
Tuesday’s forecast calls for rain early in the day, with showers supposed to clear in the afternoon and a possibility of snow. The 4 p.m. game time will allow the game to start when the sun is up and end in the darkness of Wrigleyville.
“You want to play in the daylight, and then it’s like you’re a little kid,” Montgomery said. “You stay out there for two hours until you need a hot chocolate to warm up your frozen toes and hands again. That’s the experience we’re going to have tomorrow. We wouldn’t want it any other way.”
The Blues enter the game squarely at .500, and coming off a 4-2 loss to the Sabres on Sunday afternoon that ended a brief string of two wins in a row.
“You have to embrace the moment,” Montgomery said. “You have to enjoy every second of it because this doesn’t happen very often. If your mindset is in the right place, and you’re in a place of gratitude, I think you’re going to play a great game. You’re going to go out there and you’re going to compete, you’re going to want that puck.”
In the big picture, Tuesday’s game will serve as another validation of the Blues franchise, chosen again to participate in a marquee league event. And, oh yeah, the Blues have never lost a Winter Classic, either.
“It’s a special time to live a childhood dream playing in front of a lot of fans in a historic stadium,” Blues captain Brayden Schenn said. “We feel very honored to be one of the teams chosen to play.”
