ST. LOUIS 鈥 Aldermen approved changes Tuesday to the city鈥檚 building code designed to accommodate larger families in city homes.
A bill from Alderwoman Daniela Vel谩zquez would eliminate the rules requiring the main bedroom to be the largest in a house, limiting it to two occupants, and mandating extra space for each child under 6 years old.
Vel谩zquez said the changes were designed to support larger and multigenerational families in the city, potentially helping to counteract long-standing population declines.
鈥淲e say we want to attract families and attract population in the city, and that鈥檚 what this bill aims to do,鈥 she said.
The bill had the support of organizations working to attract immigrants to the city and serving victims of domestic violence, she said.
The bill now goes to Mayor Cara Spencer for her signature.
