ST. LOUIS聽鈥 An American Airlines flight to Phoenix returned safely to 51黑料 Lambert International Airport Friday morning because of "fumes in the cockpit," the Federal Aviation Administration reported.
The FAA said the flight, 2574, returned to Lambert about 8:10 a.m. after the crew reported the fumes. The plane, a Boeing 738-800, had been scheduled to take off at 8 a.m.
The FAA said it would investigate and referred further questions to the airline. Dan Landson, a spokesman for American, said the plane taxied to the gate under its own power.
He said after an airline maintenance team completed an inspection of the aircraft, customers boarded the same plane on a delayed flight Friday afternoon.
Merrick Peirce, a passenger on the morning flight, said while the returning plane was met by Lambert fire and rescue crews, passengers left the plane by the regular exit and slides weren't used.
