Regarding the guest editorial from the Las Vegas Review-Journal (“Gender-treatment ruling is hardly a definition of tyranny,†June 24 print edition): The article states that “the medical community has reached no consensus on the wisdom of gender transition treatment for minors.†This is false. Most major medical and psychological organizations, including the American Medical Association (AMA), the American Psychiatric Association (APA), and the World Health Organization (WHO), acknowledge that being transgender is a valid and natural variation of human experience.
Furthermore, the editorial states that “allowing states to determine whether children need to be of age†before undergoing treatment is “common sense.†It's not. Common sense is giving parents, along with guided medical care, the right to decide what is best for their children. Nobody knows their child better than the child’s parents. Their rights should have priority. There are very serious consequences to delaying transgender care until the child is 19, including a high rate of suicide.

The American Heritage Dictionary defines “tyranny†as “Absolute power, especially when exercised unjustly or cruelly.†A government that bans parents from their right to take care of their child is, in fact, a perfect example of tyranny.
